Spanish Verb Conjugation 🔬🇪🇸
Hablo. Hablas. Habla. Hablamos. Habláis. Hablan.
Six forms for one verb?
If English is your first language, your first reaction may be:
“Spain... why are you doing this to me?” 😳
But Spanish conjugation isn't a random collection of endings to memorise.
There is a system. Today we're going to take that system apart and see how the machine works.
🗺️ First: look at the complete system
This infographic gives you the visual overview. Don't memorise everything yet.
First we need to understand what conjugation is actually doing.
🧩 What does “conjugate” actually mean?
A verb changes its form to give us information.
Take:
Now compare:
I speak.
You speak.
We speak.
They / you plural speak.
The ending changes because the person changes.
That change is conjugation.
⚙️ Welcome to the Spanish Verb Machine
Put an infinitive into the machine:
infinitive
stem

I speak.
Change the ending:

🏠 Spanish verbs live in three big families
🔵 -AR
hablar
to speak
trabajar
comprar
viajar
necesitar
🟠 -ER
comer
to eat
beber
aprender
comprender
vender
🟢 -IR
vivir
to live
escribir
abrir
subir
recibir
When you meet a new infinitive, the ending immediately tells you which family it belongs to.
👨🏫 Manuel's shortcut: compare the families
Instead of learning three enormous tables separately, compare the endings.
| Person | HABLAR | COMER | VIVIR |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | hablo | como | vivo |
| tú | hablas | comes | vives |
| él / ella / usted | habla | come | vive |
| nosotros/as | hablamos | comemos | vivimos |
| vosotros/as | habláis | coméis | vivís |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | hablan | comen | viven |
Notice something useful: -ER and -IR verbs are very similar in the present tense.
🔊 Hear the pattern
Don't only look at conjugations. Hear their rhythm.
I speak Spanish.
You speak Spanish.
We eat here.
They live in Málaga.
👤 But Spanish keeps hiding the pronouns!
English normally needs:
Spanish can say:
Why?
Because the verb ending often already tells us who is doing the action.
Perfectly correct.
Also perfectly normal.
Spanish does use subject pronouns, but they are often unnecessary when the context and verb form already identify the subject.
😂 ExpatFriend discovers conjugation
🧠 NeuroTip: don't memorise six isolated words
Your brain loves patterns. Give it one.
-S → often you
-MOS → us
-N → them / you plural
This isn't the complete conjugation system, but it gives a beginner useful landmarks.
Then practise the full pattern in rhythm:
hablo · hablas · habla
hablamos · habláis · hablan
🚨 And then Spanish introduces... irregular verbs
Just when ExpatFriend thinks he has solved Spanish forever:
not “so”
not “io”
not “teno”
not “haco”
Don't panic.
Regular verbs give you the basic system. High-frequency irregular verbs are then learned as especially useful patterns and chunks.

👨🏫 Now stop conjugating and start communicating
A conjugation table is useful. But nobody goes into a café and says:
We conjugate verbs because we want to build messages:
I work in Málaga.
We live in Spain.
Do you speak English?
They eat very late.
The table is the map. Communication is the journey.
☀️ One morning, three verb families
Emma and Liam are having breakfast. Watch how naturally the three families mix.
Three families:
One ordinary conversation.
⏱️ The 60-Second Conjugation Workout
Take these three verbs:
to speak
to eat
to live
Now say the yo, tú, nosotros and ellos forms without looking at the table.
Then make one real sentence with each verb.

🗺️ You understand the machine. Now travel through time.
Once you understand stems, endings and persons, the next question is:
PRESENT
Vivo
PAST
Viví
FUTURE
Viviré
CONDITIONAL
Viviría
That's the next stage of our Spanish Grammar Journey.
Once the final public URLs of the four tense lessons are confirmed, link these cards directly to Present, Past, Future and Conditional.
🏆 The idea to remember
Spanish conjugation can look enormous when you see hundreds of forms on a page.
But underneath them is a reusable idea:
Learn the system. Notice the patterns. Practise useful sentences. Meet irregular verbs gradually.
Don't memorise the machine. Learn how to operate it. ⚙️
