Pregunta con «¿dónde?»

Estás en una ciudad nueva y necesitas encontrar la parada del autobús.

You are in a new town and need to find the bus stop.

💡 Neurotip: evita preguntas sin contexto. «¿Dónde?» se olvida; «Perdone, ¿dónde está la farmacia de guardia?» ya tiene una escena, una intención y una emoción.

Spanish Question Words Made Easy | Qué, Quién, Dónde, Cuándo, Cómo & More · A1–A2

The Spanish Question Machine ❓🇪🇸

You know some Spanish words. You know some verbs. But now you need information.

Where is the station?
How much is it?
When does it open?
Why is the bus not coming?
Who do I speak to?

Welcome to the world of Spanish question words.

Learn a handful of them and suddenly you can obtain an enormous amount of information.

🗺️ Your Question Map

Start with the big picture. Don't memorise the infographic mechanically.

We're going to organise these words by the information you are looking for.

Spanish question words infographic - qué quién dónde cuándo cómo cuál cuánto por qué - A1 A2 Spanish - Neuro-Spanish for You

👨‍🏫 Manuel's Tip: start with the answer

Here's an easier way to choose a Spanish question word.

Don't begin by asking: “Which interrogative word do I need?”

Ask:

WHAT INFORMATION DO I WANT?
🏠 A thing / information ¿QUÉ...?
👤 A person ¿QUIÉN...?
📍 A place ¿DÓNDE...?
⏰ A time ¿CUÁNDO...?
🛠️ A way / method ¿CÓMO...?
💡 A reason ¿POR QUÉ...?

🔑 The essential question words

¿Qué? What?
¿Qué necesitas?
What do you need?
¿Quién? Who?
¿Quién es?
Who is it?
¿Dónde? Where?
¿Dónde está la farmacia?
Where is the pharmacy?
¿Cuándo? When?
¿Cuándo abre?
When does it open?
¿Cómo? How?
¿Cómo llego al centro?
How do I get to the centre?
¿Por qué? Why?
¿Por qué está cerrado?
Why is it closed?
¿Cuál? Which? / What?
¿Cuál prefieres?
Which one do you prefer?
¿Cuánto? How much?
¿Cuánto cuesta?
How much does it cost?

⚙️ Build a question

Spanish questions become much easier when you see them as a machine.

❓ QUESTION WORD
Dónde

⚙️ VERB

+
🏨 INFORMATION
el hotel
¿Dónde está el hotel?

Change only one part:

¿Dónde está la estación?
¿Dónde está el baño?
¿Dónde está la farmacia?
¿Dónde está el supermercado?

⚙️ ONE PATTERN → MANY QUESTIONS

🌍 Eight questions that can save your day

🚕 ¿Dónde puedo encontrar un taxi? Where can I find a taxi?
💶 ¿Cuánto cuesta? How much does it cost?
🕐 ¿A qué hora abre? What time does it open?
🗺️ ¿Cómo llego a la estación? How do I get to the station?
🛒 ¿Qué necesita? What do you need?
👤 ¿Con quién tengo que hablar? Who do I have to speak to?
🏨 ¿Cuál es mi habitación? Which is my room?
🤔 ¿Por qué no funciona? Why doesn't it work?

🚨 Tiny accent marks. Big job.

When these words are interrogative or exclamatory, they carry a written accent:

qué quién cuál cómo cuándo dónde cuánto

Compare:

¿Dónde está? Where is it?
La casa donde vivo. The house where I live.
¿Cómo lo haces? How do you do it?
Hazlo como quieras. Do it however you want.

For a beginner, the useful rule is simple: question/exclamation words usually wear their accent when doing that interrogative or exclamatory job.

👨‍🏫 ¿Por qué? ≠ porque

This pair deserves special attention.

¿Por qué...? Why...?
¿Por qué estudias español?
Porque... Because...
Porque vivo en España.
¿Por qué estudias español?
↓
Porque vivo en España.

Question and answer form a natural pair. Learn them together.

🧠 ¿Qué? or ¿Cuál?

English often translates both with what or which, so learners naturally get confused.

A useful beginner contrast is:

¿Qué...?

Often asks for information, a definition or identifies a type/category.

¿Qué necesitas?
¿Qué película quieres ver?
¿Cuál...?

Often asks you to identify or choose from possibilities.

¿Cuál prefieres?
¿Cuál es tu número?

This is a useful starting distinction, not a complete rule: the distribution of qué and cuál does not map perfectly onto English “what” and “which”.

💶 The very useful CUÁNTO family

Cuánto can change to agree with the noun.

¿Cuánto cuesta? How much does it cost?
¿Cuánta agua necesitas? How much water do you need?
¿Cuántos días? How many days?
¿Cuántas personas? How many people?

So one interrogative family gives you:

cuánto · cuánta · cuántos · cuántas

😂 ExpatFriend interrogates Spain

ExpatFriend: ¿Dónde?
Local: ¿Dónde qué?
💭 Apparently one question word is not a complete conversation.
ExpatFriend: ¿Dónde está... eh... tren?
Local: ¿La estación de tren?
ExpatFriend: ¡Sí! ¿Dónde está la estación de tren?
💭 Upgrade complete. 😎

The question word opened the door. The pattern completed the message.

🎮 What information do you need?

Don't translate. Think about the missing information.

1. 📍 You need a LOCATION.
2. ⏰ You need to know WHEN.
3. 👤 You need to identify a PERSON.
4. 💶 You need the PRICE.
5. 🤔 You want the REASON.

⭐ XP: 0   ·   🔥 Streak: 0

🧠 NeuroTip: answer first, question second

Try this retrieval exercise.

Look at the answer and invent the question:

ANSWER:
En Málaga.

What question word do you need?
ANSWER:
A las nueve.

What question word do you need?
ANSWER:
Veinte euros.

What question word do you need?
ANSWER:
Porque está cerrado.

What question word do you need?

Possible questions:

¿Dónde vives?
¿Cuándo abre?
¿Cuánto cuesta?
¿Por qué no podemos entrar?

This forces your brain to retrieve the interrogative from its function, not just recognise it on a list.

⛓️ The Question Chain Challenge

Imagine you've just arrived in a new Spanish town. Ask six questions in this order:

📍 WHERE? Find the hotel.
💶 HOW MUCH? Ask a price.
⏰ WHEN? Ask an opening time.
👤 WHO? Find the right person.
🛠️ HOW? Ask how to get somewhere.
💡 WHY? Ask for a reason.
❓ WHAT? Ask for information.
🎯 WHICH? Choose an option.

Don't read the examples above until you've tried.

🧠 RETRIEVAL MODE ACTIVATED

🏆 The real superpower isn't knowing the answer

When you're learning a language, you can't know every word or every situation.

But if you can ask:

¿Qué...?
¿Quién...?
¿Dónde...?
¿Cuándo...?
¿Cómo...?
¿Por qué...?
¿Cuál...?
¿Cuánto...?

you can make other people give you the information you need.
