POR or PARA? 🛣️🎯
Two tiny Spanish words. One English translation that causes enormous trouble: “for”.
You buy something for someone.
You thank someone for something.
You work for a company.
You walk through a town.
Spanish looks at the relationship behind the sentence and often chooses either POR or PARA.
So forget “for” for a moment.

👨🏫 Manuel's Tip: route or target?
There isn't one magic rule that explains every use of por and para.
But this mental image is extremely useful when you're learning:
Look inside the journey.
Route · cause · means · exchange · duration
Look towards the target.
Purpose · recipient · destination · deadline
Treat this as a memory tool, not as a rule that magically covers every possible sentence.
🛣️ POR: look inside the journey
Paseamos por Mijas.
We walk around/through Mijas.Lo hago por ti.
I'm doing it because of / for you.Pagué diez euros por el libro.
I paid ten euros for the book.Hablamos por teléfono.
We speak by phone.Estudié por dos horas.
I studied for two hours.Gracias por tu ayuda.
Thanks for your help.🎯 PARA: look towards the target
Estudio español para trabajar en España.
I study Spanish in order to work in Spain.Este regalo es para Emma.
This present is for Emma.Salimos para Madrid mañana.
We're leaving for Madrid tomorrow.Lo necesito para mañana.
I need it by/for tomorrow.Estas gafas son para leer.
These glasses are for reading.La mesa es para cuatro personas.
The table is for four people.
⚖️ Same English word. Different Spanish idea.
This is where things become interesting.
💶 Exchange → POR
🎁 Recipient → PARA
💶 Motivation/exchange → POR
🎯 Employer/intended beneficiary → PARA
English says for in all four sentences. Spanish asks:
👨🏫 Learn contrasts, not definitions
Compare these pairs:
🛣️ Route
🎯 Destination
❤️ Cause / motivation
🎁 Intended recipient/beneficiary
The difference is not the English translation. It's the relationship.
🧠 Stop thinking: learn these as chunks
Some combinations are so common that it is better to retrieve the whole expression.
You don't need to reconstruct these expressions from grammar every time you speak.

⚡ The 5-second decision
When you're unsure, don't ask “Does this mean FOR?”
Ask what the relationship is:
💡 CAUSE? → POR
💶 EXCHANGE? → POR
📞 MEANS? → POR
🎯 PURPOSE? → PARA
🎁 RECIPIENT? → PARA
📍 DESTINATION? → PARA
⏰ DEADLINE? → PARA

🧠 The Two-Column Memory Trick
Close your eyes after reading this. Try to reconstruct both sides.
route
cause
means
exchange
duration
purpose
recipient
destination
deadline
Now hide the list and retrieve it.
Then create one sentence for each side.
