ESTE, ESE, AQUEL 👉 | The Chiringuito Challenge · Spanish Demonstratives A1–A2

NEURO-SPANISH FOR YOU! · A1–A2

👉 ESTE, ESE... ¿AQUEL?

The Chiringuito Challenge

You're sitting in a chiringuito beach bar on the Costa del Sol. The waiter is waiting. You know exactly what you want. There's just one tiny problem: you don't know how to point at it in Spanish.

☀️ Real-life Spanish 👉 Demonstratives 🎧 Listen & repeat 🎮 Mini challenge 🧠 A1–A2
TODAY'S DISASTER

😂 ExpatFriend just wants lunch

It's one o'clock in La Cala de Mijas. The terraza terrace is busy, the Mediterranean is shining and ExpatFriend is studying the menu.

He sees a delicious plate of sardinas sardines on the next table. Farther away, another waiter is carrying a huge paella paella / Spanish rice dish.

The waiter arrives.

CAMARERO: ¿Qué va a tomar?
EXPATFRIEND: Eh... quiero... this.
CAMARERO: ¿Esto?
EXPATFRIEND: No, no. That.
CAMARERO: ¿Eso?
EXPATFRIEND: No... THAT over there!
CAMARERO: Ah... ¡aquella paella!

💥 And there it is: the Spanish distance problem.

YOUR VISUAL MAP

🏖️ First, study the chiringuito

Look carefully at the infographic. Don't try to memorise every word. Notice the idea of distance: near me, near you, or farther away.

THE EASY SYSTEM

📍 Spanish has a little GPS

English mainly gives us this and that. Spanish gives us a more detailed distance system.

🙋‍♂️🥤
ESTE · ESTA

Near me. The thing is close to the person speaking.

Esta cerveza
= this beer

🙋‍♂️ ➜ 🥤
ESE · ESA

Over there / near you. It isn't right here with me.

Esa cerveza
= that beer

🙋‍♂️ ➜ ➜ 🥤
AQUEL · AQUELLA

Farther away. We're pointing into the distance.

Aquella mesa
= that table over there

DON'T PANIC

🧩 The forms make sense

Spanish demonstratives agree with the noun. If the noun is masculine, feminine or plural, the demonstrative changes too.

Distance Masculine Feminine Plural
📍 HERE este esta estos / estas
👉 THERE ese esa esos / esas
🌅 OVER THERE aquel aquella aquellos / aquellas

So we can say: este plato, esta mesa, esas sardinas or aquellos barcos.

MANUEL'S TIP

🧠 Don't memorise a table first

When I teach demonstratives, I prefer to begin with a physical idea: point at something.

Put three objects at different distances. Then say:

👉 este libro
👉 ese libro
👉 aquel libro

Your brain now has a place for the words. Only afterwards do we worry about the complete grammar table.

Language is easier to remember when it is attached to an action.

LISTEN & POINT

🎧 Hear it. Say it. Point at it.

Press the speaker, listen and repeat aloud. The audio uses a slightly slower speed to make the phrases easier to catch.

🍺 Esta cerveza.
🍽️ Ese plato.
🥘 Aquella paella.
🐟 Esas sardinas.
⛵ Aquellos barcos.
🪑 Esta mesa está libre.

BACK TO THE CHIRINGUITO

🍺 Now ExpatFriend can actually order

EXPATFRIEND: Quiero esta cerveza, por favor.
CAMARERO: Claro. ¿Algo para comer?
EXPATFRIEND: Sí. ¿Qué lleva ese plato?
CAMARERO: Son sardinas.
EXPATFRIEND: Perfecto. Y... ¿qué es aquello?
CAMARERO: Aquello es una paella de marisco.
EXPATFRIEND: ¡Pues quiero aquella paella!

Notice something important: real conversations mix grammar with useful chunks such as ¿Qué lleva...? What's in...? / What does it contain?, por favor please and pues quiero... well, I'd like....

60-SECOND CHALLENGE

🎮 Can you save ExpatFriend's lunch?

Choose the most logical demonstrative. Think about distance before clicking.

1. The beer is in your hand:
___ cerveza está muy fría.
2. You point to a table farther away:
___ mesa está libre.
3. The sardines are on the waiter's tray near him:
Quiero ___ sardinas.
4. Some boats are far out at sea:
¡Mira ___ barcos!
YOUR REAL-LIFE MISSION

👉 Point your way through Spain

No worksheet for this one. Use the world around you.

Today, say five phrases aloud:

1️⃣ Este / esta...
2️⃣ Ese / esa...
3️⃣ Aquel / aquella...
4️⃣ Estos / estas...
5️⃣ Esos / esas / aquellos / aquellas...

At home, in a café, on the street, at the supermarket or on the beach.

Five real objects. Five real phrases.

🧠 Don't collect grammar rules.
Collect things you can actually say.

BEFORE YOU GO

⚡ The 10-second recap

🙋 HERE ESTE / ESTA this
👉 THERE ESE / ESA that
🌅 OVER THERE AQUEL / AQUELLA that over there
NEURO-SPANISH FOR YOU!

Spanish doesn't live in a grammar book.

It lives in cafés, markets, streets, conversations, mistakes... and yes, even in a chiringuito while you're desperately pointing at somebody else's paella.

👉 ESTE.
👉 ESE.
👉 AQUEL.

Now point — and speak.
