You've survived the airport.
You've found your apartment.
You've even ordered a coffee in Spanish.
Then one morning you wake up feeling terrible.
You walk into a Spanish pharmacy...
and suddenly realise that your entire medical vocabulary consists of:
“Hola... eh... paracetamol?” 😳
Welcome to Expat Survival Spain:
real Spanish for the problems nobody teaches you.
😂 First, enjoy the disaster
Before studying anything, look at the original episode.
Try to understand the situation from the pictures,
expressions and Spanish you already know.
🎯 Survival mission
Forget perfect Spanish.
Your objective is much more realistic:
walk into a pharmacy and communicate the basic problem clearly.
You'll practise how to:
say that something hurts;
describe a few common symptoms;
ask for something for a symptom;
say how long you've had the problem;
understand a few common pharmacy questions;
ask for clarification when your Spanish collapses spectacularly.
🎬 Scene 1: everything is under control
Our ExpatFriend walks confidently into the
farmacia.
Farmacéutica:
Buenos días. ¿En qué puedo ayudarle?
💭 Excellent. She said “Buenos días”. I know this.
ExpatFriend:
Buenos días. Tengo...
Silence.
The Spanish vocabulary department of his brain
has temporarily closed for maintenance.
💭 Head... cabeza! Pain... dolor! YES! I'M BACK!
ExpatFriend:
Tengo... dolor... cabeza.
Farmacéutica:
¿Dolor de cabeza?
ExpatFriend:
¡Eso! ¡Eso! Dolor de cabeza.
🎉 Communication achieved. Grammar slightly injured. Patient still alive.
👨🏫 Manuel's Survival Tip #1: learn chunks, not dictionaries
In a stressful situation you don't need fifty isolated words.
You need a few ready-made chunks.
TENGO + problem
Tengo dolor de cabeza.I have a headache.
Tengo fiebre.I have a fever.
Tengo tos.I have a cough.
Tengo dolor de garganta.I have a sore throat.
Tengo alergia.I have an allergy.
Tengo el estómago revuelto. My stomach is upset.
🤕 Survival Tool #2: ME DUELE...
Another extremely useful pattern is:
ME DUELE + singular body part
Me duele la cabeza. My head hurts.
Me duele la garganta. My throat hurts.
Me duele el estómago. My stomach hurts.
Me duele la espalda. My back hurts.
And with plural things:
ME DUELEN + plural
Me duelen los pies. My feet hurt.
🎬 Scene 2: the pharmacist asks a question 😱
Farmacéutica:
¿Desde cuándo le duele?
💭 Oh no. She has activated Level B2.
ExpatFriend:
...
Farmacéutica:
¿Cuánto tiempo lleva así?
💭 Abort mission. ABORT MISSION.
Except... we don't need to abort anything.
We need one survival strategy.
🆘 When you understand absolutely nothing
These may be more valuable than another twenty nouns:
Perdone, no entiendo.Sorry, I don't understand.
¿Puede repetirlo?Can you repeat that?
¿Puede hablar más despacio? Can you speak more slowly?
¿Qué significa eso? What does that mean?
These aren't signs that your Spanish has failed.
They are communication tools.
💊 Survival Tool #3: ask for help, not a miracle
A useful pattern is:
¿TIENE ALGO PARA + problem?
¿Tiene algo para el dolor de cabeza?Do you have something for a headache?
¿Tiene algo para la tos?Do you have something for a cough?
¿Tiene algo para el dolor de garganta?Do you have something for a sore throat?
¿Tiene algo para las picaduras?Do you have something for insect bites?
Notice what we're learning:
a reusable structure, not four unrelated sentences.
⏰ “How long have you felt like this?”
You don't need a complicated answer.
You can communicate with:
Desde ayer.Since yesterday.
Desde esta mañana.Since this morning.
Desde hace dos días.For two days.
Desde hace una semana. For a week.
Short answers are still real communication.
👨🏫 Manuel's Survival Tip #2: listen for the key question
At a pharmacy, you may be asked questions such as:
¿Tiene fiebre?Do you have a fever?
¿Desde cuándo?Since when?
¿Tiene alguna alergia?Do you have any allergies?
¿Toma algún medicamento?Do you take any medication?
You don't need to understand every word immediately.
Listen for anchors:
fiebre · alergia · medicamento · desde cuándo.
⚕️ Language lesson ≠ medical diagnosis
This lesson teaches Spanish communication.
It does not tell you which medicine you should take.
If symptoms are severe, unusual, persistent or worrying,
seek appropriate professional medical care.
Your Spanish mission is simple:
describe the situation as clearly as you can and ask questions when you don't understand.
🎭 Now let's replay the disaster properly
Farmacéutica:
Buenos días. ¿En qué puedo ayudarle?
ExpatFriend:
Buenos días. Me duele mucho la garganta y tengo tos.
Farmacéutica:
¿Desde cuándo?
ExpatFriend:
Desde ayer.
Farmacéutica:
¿Tiene fiebre?
ExpatFriend:
No.
Farmacéutica:
¿Toma algún medicamento?
ExpatFriend:
Perdone, ¿puede repetirlo más despacio?
Farmacéutica:
Claro.
🏆 No panic. No mime. No international distress signals.
🧠 NeuroTip: The 5-Chunk Emergency Kit
If you remember nothing else, remember these five:
Me duele...
Tengo...
¿Tiene algo para...?
¿Puede repetirlo?
¿Puede hablar más despacio?
Say them aloud three times.
Then close the page and try again without looking.

🎙️ Your real-life mission
Imagine you walk into a pharmacy tomorrow.
You have a headache and a cough.
It started yesterday.
Without looking above, try to say:
Good morning.
My head hurts.
I have a cough.
Since yesterday.
Do you have something for the cough?
Can you repeat that more slowly?
If you can communicate those six ideas,
the lesson has done its job.

One problem. One mission. Real Spanish.
🇪🇸 Expat Survival Spain
This is Episode 01: The Pharmacy Disaster.
The idea behind the series is simple:
you don't learn Spanish because somebody gives you
a perfect grammar exercise.
You learn it because one day you need to buy something,
explain a problem, make an appointment,
catch a train, speak to a receptionist...
or survive five minutes in a pharmacy without turning the conversation
into international mime.
Real Spanish for the problems nobody teaches you.

He came to Spain for the

There was only one tiny problem.
His Spanish. 😳
Welcome to G.U.I.R.I.,
our comic journey through the everyday situations
that suddenly become surprisingly complicated
when you don't know what to say.
This is Expat Survival Spain:
Real Spanish for the problems nobody teaches you.
🎬 Meet our ExpatFriend
This is where the adventure begins.
Look carefully at the original presentation.
Our hero is optimistic, enthusiastic
and completely convinced that his Spanish is
“not bad at all.”
Spain is about to test that theory.
🇪🇸 So... what exactly is G.U.I.R.I.?
It's not a traditional Spanish course.
There are no characters sitting in a classroom saying:
Student A:
Hola, me llamo John. ¿Cómo te llamas?
Student B:
Hola, John. Me llamo Susan.
Because real life has other plans.
Real life says:
💊 Explain your problem in a pharmacy.
🩺 Understand what they're asking you at the doctor.
🛒 Find something in a supermarket.
🚆 Buy the correct train ticket.
🏨 Explain a problem at a hotel.
🏛️ Survive Spanish bureaucracy.
And that is where our ExpatFriend comes in.
😂 Who is ExpatFriend?
☀️ Optimistic
He believes three weeks in Spain
have made him practically bilingual.
🇪🇸 Brave
He will attempt a Spanish conversation
with approximately seven words available.
🧠 Creative
When vocabulary disappears,
mime becomes an official language.
❤️ Determined
Every disaster teaches him something useful
for the next adventure.
Most importantly, we don't laugh at somebody
for learning Spanish.
We laugh at the absurd situations all language learners recognise —
and then use those situations to learn something useful.
🎬 The universal ExpatFriend experience
ExpatFriend:
Hola. 😎
💭 Excellent pronunciation. Strong opening.
Spanish speaker:
Hola, buenos días. Dígame, ¿en qué puedo ayudarle?
💭 ............
💭 That escalated quickly.
WELCOME TO G.U.I.R.I. 😂
👨🏫 Manuel's rule: communication before perfection
The aim of this series isn't to make you speak
perfect Spanish before you leave your house.
The aim is to give you enough Spanish to
do something real.
1
Understand
Catch the important words.
2
Respond
Use short, useful chunks.
3
Repair
Know what to say when communication breaks down.
Because successful communication isn't:
“I understood every word.”
Sometimes successful communication is:
“I didn't understand everything — but I solved the problem.”
🧠 Your five Spanish survival superpowers
Before Episode 01 even begins,
let's give ExpatFriend five emergency tools.
Perdone...Excuse me / Sorry...
No entiendo.I don't understand.
¿Puede repetirlo?Can you repeat that?
¿Puede hablar más despacio? Can you speak more slowly?
¿Qué significa...?What does ... mean?
Gracias.Thank you.

🚫 What G.U.I.R.I. doesn't do
❌ 50 random words
We prefer five expressions you might actually use.
❌ Perfect grammar first
Communication doesn't wait until you've completed B2.
❌ Translation of everything
Your brain also needs context, inference and repetition.
❌ Fear of mistakes
Mistakes give us material for the next episode.
😂 Would YOU survive five minutes?
Let's find out.
1. Someone speaks very quickly. You...
2. You didn't understand. You...
3. You need the person to say it again.
4. You don't know one word.

🏆 The Golden Rule of G.U.I.R.I.
YOU DON'T NEED PERFECT SPANISH.
YOU NEED USEFUL SPANISH.
Imagine you arrive in Spain tomorrow with only
20 Spanish verbs in your pocket.
Which ones would help you
eat, travel, buy, ask, understand, pay, find things and solve problems?
Welcome to the Survival Verbs Game.
You don't need 500 verbs to start communicating.
You need a small group of verbs that can do a lot of work.

👨🏫 Manuel's Tip: don't learn a verb — learn what it lets you DO
Knowing that necesitar = to need is useful.
But your brain has much more to work with when you learn:
Necesito ayuda. I need help.
So throughout this game we won't collect dictionary entries.
We'll collect usable Spanish.
LEVEL 1 · STAY ALIVE 😅

⚡ The real trick: combine your verbs
Twenty verbs don't produce twenty sentences.
They produce hundreds of combinations.
QUIERO + COMPRAR
Quiero comprar un billete.
I want to buy a ticket.
NECESITO + ENCONTRAR
Necesito encontrar una farmacia.
I need to find a pharmacy.
PUEDO + PAGAR
¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta?
Can I pay by card?
QUIERO + COMER
Quiero comer algo.
I want to eat something.
This is where vocabulary starts becoming
communication.
😂 ExpatFriend tries his new superpowers
ExpatFriend:
Quiero...
Waiter:
¿Sí?
ExpatFriend:
Comer.
Waiter:
Eso espero. Esto es un restaurante.
Technically successful. 😂
But now let's upgrade it:
Quisiera comer algo, por favor.
Survival Spanish gets you through the door.
Then we gradually make it more natural, flexible and polite.
🧠 NeuroTip: steal these verb combinations
Don't analyse them first.
Say them.
Necesito ayuda.
Quiero reservar.
No puedo encontrarlo.
No entiendo.
¿Dónde puedo pagar?
¿Qué tengo que hacer?
🧠 Read → listen → cover → retrieve → use.
🎮 SURVIVAL MODE ACTIVATED
Five problems. Choose the verb that saves you.
🛒 You want to buy a bottle of water.
🗺️ You can't find your hotel.
💳 You want to ask if you can pay by card.
😵 Somebody is speaking and you understand nothing.
🆘 You need help.
👾 BOSS LEVEL: Spanish disappears!
You arrive at a train station.
You want to go to Málaga.
You need a ticket.
You want to pay by card.
Build the conversation from your survival verbs.
You:
Buenos días. Quiero comprar un billete para Málaga.
Employee:
¿Solo ida o ida y vuelta?
You:
Perdone, no entiendo. ¿Puede repetirlo?
Employee:
¿Ida y vuelta?
You:
Sí. Ida y vuelta. ¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta?
🏆 BOSS DEFEATED.

you didn't need advanced grammar.
