The Spanish GPS 🧭 | Spanish Prepositions Made Easy · A1–A2

A1–A2 · SPANISH GRAMMAR JOURNEY

The Spanish GPS 📍🇪🇸

A, de, en, con, sin, para, por...

They're tiny words. They look harmless.

And then you try to say:

“I live in Spain.”
“I'm going to Málaga.”
“I'm coming from the hotel.”
“This is for you.”

Suddenly those tiny words are everywhere.

Welcome to the Spanish GPS. 🧭

Today we're not going to memorise a dictionary of prepositions. We're going to use them to understand where things are, where they go and how they connect.

🗺️ Your Preposition Map

Start with the complete visual map. Then we'll turn the information into real Spanish.

👨‍🏫 Manuel's Tip: don't translate prepositions one by one

This is one of the most useful habits you can develop.

English and Spanish prepositions do not always match perfectly.

So instead of learning:

❌ EN = in
❌ A = to
❌ DE = from

learn complete patterns:

Vivo EN España.
Voy A Málaga.
Vengo DE Londres.
Hablo CON Ana.

The preposition becomes part of a useful chunk.

🧭 The three coordinates every beginner needs

📍 WHERE?
EN
→
🚗 WHERE TO?
A
→
🏠 WHERE FROM?
DE
EN in / on / at
Estoy en Málaga.
I'm in Málaga.
A to / at
Voy a Málaga.
I'm going to Málaga.
DE from / of
Vengo de Málaga.
I'm coming from Málaga.

🧭 FIRST GPS COORDINATES UNLOCKED

🚗 One journey, three prepositions

Imagine Emma leaves her hotel and goes into Málaga.

🏨 Emma está EN el hotel.
🚶 Emma sale DEL hotel.
➡️ Emma va A Málaga.
🌆 Emma está EN Málaga.

Notice the logic:

EN = location
DE = origin
A = destination

🚨 A + EL and DE + EL have a secret

Spanish contracts these combinations:

A + EL = AL
Voy al supermercado.
DE + EL = DEL
Vengo del supermercado.

So we normally say:

Voy AL hotel.
Vengo DEL hotel.

Not:

Voy a el hotel.
Vengo de el hotel.

🤝 WITH or WITHOUT?

CON with
Café con leche.
SIN without
Café sin azúcar.

Two tiny words that can solve a surprising number of problems:

Agua con gas.
Agua sin gas.
Habitación con balcón.
Comida sin gluten.

🎯 PARA: think DESTINATION or PURPOSE

For beginners, para becomes much easier if you first associate it with a target.

Este regalo es para Ana. This present is for Ana.
Estudio español para trabajar en España. I study Spanish to work in Spain.
Salgo para Madrid mañana. I'm leaving for Madrid tomorrow.
Esto es para ti. This is for you.
🎯 PARA → target / destination / purpose

🛣️ POR: think ROUTE, CAUSE or EXCHANGE

Por has many uses, so don't try to master every one today.

Start with three useful ideas:

ROUTE

Paseamos por Mijas. We walk around/through Mijas.
CAUSE

Gracias por tu ayuda. Thanks for your help.
EXCHANGE

Pagué diez euros por esto. I paid ten euros for this.

👨‍🏫 POR or PARA? Don't try to solve the universe today

This contrast deserves its own lesson. For A1–A2, start with a mental picture:

POR 🛣️

Think about the route, reason or means/exchange.

Caminamos por el centro.
PARA 🎯

Think about the target, recipient or purpose.

Este café es para Liam.

This is a learning shortcut, not a complete grammatical description. Both prepositions have many uses that are best learned progressively in context.

📦 Where is the coffee?

Now let's place one object around a table.

ENCIMA DE on top of
El café está encima de la mesa.
DEBAJO DE under
La bolsa está debajo de la mesa.
DELANTE DE in front of
Liam está delante del hotel.
DETRÁS DE behind
El coche está detrás del hotel.
AL LADO DE next to
La farmacia está al lado del banco.
ENTRE between / among
El hotel está entre dos restaurantes.

⏰ Prepositions also travel through time

DESDE since / from
Vivo aquí desde 2024.
HASTA until / up to
Trabajo hasta las cinco.
desde las nueve → hasta las cinco

Origin and destination aren't only physical. They can also mark the beginning and end of time.

💭 Fine. A Málaga.
ExpatFriend: Ahora estoy a Málaga.
Manuel: Ahora estás en Málaga.
