Spanish at the Supermarket. A1–A2 Survival Spanish for Expats

A1–A2 · EXPAT SURVIVAL SPAIN · NEURO-SPANISH FOR YOU!

Spanish at the Supermarket 🛒🇪🇸

Emma and Liam need a few things for dinner. Easy, right? They walk into a supermarket in Mijas with a lista de la compra. Ten minutes later they are looking for olive oil, trying to understand an offer and wondering whether they have to weigh the tomatoes themselves.

Welcome to another completely ordinary Spanish situation that suddenly becomes a language lesson.

Today we're going shopping — in Spanish.

🎯 Your supermarket mission

By the time you reach the checkout, you'll know how to:

  • ask where a product is;
  • ask for another brand;
  • understand basic offers and discounts;
  • ask for a quantity;
  • find out whether fruit and vegetables need weighing;
  • ask about the price;
  • understand basic checkout questions;
  • pay by card or cash.

Level: A1–A2 · Place: a supermarket in Mijas · Mission: fill the basket without switching to English.

👀 Your visual shopping guide

Start with the infographic. Look at the situations rather than trying to memorise everything. Then we'll take the language off the poster and into a real supermarket.

Spanish phrases for shopping at a supermarket in Spain - A1 A2 Survival Spanish - Neuro-Spanish for You

📝 Emma & Liam's shopping list

Tonight they want a simple Spanish-style dinner. Their basket needs:

🍅 tomates 🥔 patatas 🫒 aceite de oliva 🥖 pan 🧀 queso 🥩 carne 🥛 leche 🍎 fruta

The vocabulary is easy. The interesting part begins when they can't find something.

🔑 12 supermarket phrases worth learning

Perdone, ¿dónde puedo encontrar el aceite de oliva? Excuse me, where can I find the olive oil?
¿Tiene otra marca? Do you have another brand?
¿Hay una opción más barata? Is there a cheaper option?
¿Está de oferta? Is it on special offer?
¿Cuánto cuesta? How much does it cost?
Quisiera medio kilo, por favor. I'd like half a kilo, please.
¿Tengo que pesar esto? Do I have to weigh this?
¿Dónde está la báscula? Where are the scales?
¿Necesito una bolsa? Do I need a bag?
No necesito bolsa, gracias. I don't need a bag, thank you.
¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta? Can I pay by card?
¿Me da el recibo, por favor? Can I have the receipt, please?

🥑 Mission 1: Where on earth is the olive oil?

Emma: Perdone, ¿dónde puedo encontrar el aceite de oliva? Excuse me, where can I find the olive oil?
Empleado: Está en el pasillo cinco, al fondo, a la derecha. It's in aisle five, at the back, on the right.
Emma: Gracias. ¿Y la leche? Thank you. And the milk?
Empleado: En el pasillo de al lado. In the next aisle.

Suddenly Emma has acquired four extremely useful pieces of supermarket Spanish:

  • el pasillo — aisle
  • al fondo — at the back
  • a la derecha — on the right
  • al lado — next to / beside

🏷️ Mission 2: The mysterious yellow label

Liam finds two packets of cheese. One has a large yellow label:

OFERTA · 2ª UNIDAD -50%

This is where supermarket Spanish becomes useful. You may see words such as:

oferta special offer
descuento discount
segunda unidad second item
precio price

If the sign is confusing, don't stand there trying to solve it like a mathematical theorem. Ask:

Perdone, ¿cómo funciona esta oferta?
Excuse me, how does this offer work?

⚖️ Mission 3: The tomato crisis

Emma puts six beautiful tomatoes into a bag. Then she notices a báscula near the fruit and vegetables.

Now comes the classic question:

¿Tengo que pesar esto?

Depending on the supermarket and product, produce may be weighed by the customer or during checkout. So don't assume: look at the instructions or ask.

If you need to do it yourself, you may have to select the product, weigh it and attach the printed etiqueta.

🥩 Mission 4: How much do you want?

At a staffed counter, quantities become important. You don't need complicated grammar. You need chunks.

Cien gramos, por favor. 100 grams, please.
Doscientos gramos. 200 grams.
Medio kilo. Half a kilo.
Un kilo. One kilo.
Un poco más. A little more.
Así está bien, gracias. That's fine, thank you.

👨‍🏫 Manuel's Spanish Tip: learn the supermarket machine

One sentence can do a huge amount of work:

¿Dónde puedo encontrar...?

Now simply change the final words:

  • ¿Dónde puedo encontrar el pan?
  • ¿Dónde puedo encontrar la leche?
  • ¿Dónde puedo encontrar el arroz?
  • ¿Dónde puedo encontrar el vino?
  • ¿Dónde puedo encontrar productos sin gluten?

This is why I prefer teaching chunks rather than enormous vocabulary lists. One useful structure can generate twenty conversations.

💳 Mission 5: You've reached the checkout!

You have survived the aisles. Now don't relax. The caja has its own Spanish.

Cajera: Buenas tardes. ¿Quiere bolsa? Good afternoon. Would you like a bag?
Liam: No, gracias. Tenemos bolsas. No, thank you. We have bags.
Cajera: Son treinta y siete euros con veinte. That's €37.20.
Liam: ¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta? Can I pay by card?
Cajera: Sí, claro. Yes, of course.
Liam: ¿Me da el recibo, por favor? Can I have the receipt, please?
Cajera: Aquí tiene. Gracias. Here you are. Thank you.
Liam: Gracias. Hasta luego. Thank you. See you later.

👂 Things you may hear at the checkout

Sometimes the problem isn't knowing what to say. It's understanding what somebody has just said to you. Listen for phrases like:

  • ¿Quiere bolsa? — Would you like a bag?
  • ¿Tiene tarjeta? — Do you have a card?
  • ¿Efectivo o tarjeta? — Cash or card?
  • Puede acercar la tarjeta. — You can tap your card.
  • Aquí tiene el recibo. — Here's your receipt.
  • Gracias. Hasta luego. — Thank you. See you later.

Don't try to translate every word. Listen for the key information.

🧠 NeuroTip: turn your real shopping list into Spanish

Before your next supermarket visit, write only five items in Spanish. For example:

pan leche tomates queso arroz

Then choose one sentence that you promise yourself you will use in the shop.

¿Dónde puedo encontrar...?

Using one phrase in a real interaction is more memorable than reading it twenty times on a screen.

🚀 Your next supermarket mission

Next time you go shopping in Spain, don't try to conduct an entire conversation in Spanish.

Do something smaller:

  1. Write five products in Spanish.
  2. Find four without help.
  3. For the fifth, ask a member of staff:

Perdone, ¿dónde puedo encontrar...?

Then finish with: Gracias.

That's it. One authentic interaction. Tomorrow you can do another.
