SER or ESTAR? 🌊 Spanish at the Beach · A1–A2

NEURO-SPANISH FOR YOU! · A1–A2

🌊 SER OR ESTAR?

The Beach Test

The sea is beautiful. The beer is cold. Ian is tired. Mijas is in Málaga. Four English sentences. But Spanish refuses to use the same “to be” every time.

🏖️ Real-life Spanish 🧠 SER vs ESTAR 🎧 Listen & repeat 💬 Conversation 🎮 Beach Test
ONE AFTERNOON IN LA CALA

☀️ Look around you

Imagine you're sitting beside the sea in La Cala de Mijas. Don't think about grammar yet. Just look at the scene.

🌊 El mar es precioso.
The sea is beautiful.
🍺 La cerveza está fría.
The beer is cold.
😴 Ian está cansado.
Ian is tired.
😄 Jill es muy simpática.
Jill is very friendly.
📍 La Cala está en Mijas.
La Cala is in Mijas.
🇪🇸 Mijas es un municipio andaluz.
Mijas is an Andalusian municipality.

Same English verb. Two different Spanish lenses.

YOUR VISUAL GUIDE

🏖️ Study the beach before the rule

Look at the situations in the infographic. Try to notice what Spanish is doing with SER and ESTAR before reading the explanation below.

Guía playera de Neuro-Spanish for You! para aprender la diferencia entre SER y ESTAR en español
TWO WAYS OF LOOKING

📸 SER describes. ESTAR situates.

🪪 SER

Think of identity, definition and characteristics.

  • Who or what is it?
  • What is it like?
  • Where is someone from?
  • What is their profession?
  • What time or date is it?

Jill es escocesa.
Jill is Scottish.

El chiringuito es pequeño.
The beach bar is small.

📍 ESTAR

Think of location, condition and state.

  • Where is it?
  • How is someone now?
  • What condition is something in?
  • How does something seem/taste now?
  • What is happening? — estar + gerund

Jill está en la playa.
Jill is on the beach.

El chiringuito está lleno.
The beach bar is full.

MANUEL'S TIP

🚨 Forget one dangerous shortcut

You've probably heard:

SER = permanent
ESTAR = temporary

It can occasionally help beginners notice a pattern, but it is not a reliable rule.

For example:

📍 Madrid está en España.

Madrid's location is hardly temporary. We use ESTAR because we're expressing location.

A better question is not “Is this permanent?”

Ask: “What am I doing with this sentence?”

SAME PERSON · DIFFERENT MESSAGE

🔄 Watch the meaning change

These pairs are much more useful than memorising an enormous list of abstract rules.

😄 Ian es tranquilo.
Ian is a calm person.
😌 Ian está tranquilo.
Ian is calm right now.
🍺 La cerveza es española.
The beer is Spanish.
🧊 La cerveza está fría.
The beer is cold.
🏖️ La playa es preciosa.
The beach is beautiful.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 La playa está llena.
The beach is crowded.
👨‍🍳 Paco es camarero.
Paco is a waiter.
📍 Paco está en la terraza.
Paco is on the terrace.
🥘 La paella es valenciana.
Paella is Valencian.
😋 La paella está buenísima.
The paella tastes delicious.
SPANISH IN THE WILD

😋 “Es bueno” and “está bueno” aren't identical

Context matters. Compare:

El pescado es bueno.
The fish is good / of good quality.
El pescado está bueno.
The fish tastes good.
Manuel es aburrido.
Manuel is boring.
Manuel está aburrido.
Manuel is bored.

That tiny verb can change the message considerably. So don't learn adjectives alone. Learn small chunks: estar cansado, ser simpático, estar lleno, ser español, estar buenísimo.

LISTEN · NOTICE · REPEAT

🎧 Train your ear

Listen to each sentence and repeat it aloud. Pay special attention to the verb. Don't translate word by word. Try to connect the whole phrase with the situation.

🏖️ La playa es preciosa.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 La playa está llena.
😄 Jill es muy simpática.
😴 Ian está cansado.
🍺 La cerveza está fría.
📍 El chiringuito está junto al mar.
🇪🇸 Ian es escocés.
😋 Las sardinas están buenísimas.

REAL SPANISH

🍺 Ian & Jill put the rule to work

JILL: ¡Qué bonita está looks / is right now la playa hoy!
IAN: Sí. La Cala es preciosa.
JILL: ¿Dónde está el chiringuito?
IAN: Está allí, junto al paseo marítimo.
JILL: Perfecto. Yo estoy muerta de hambre.
IAN: Y yo estoy muerto de sed.
JILL: ¿Las sardinas son buenas aquí?
IAN: No lo sé, pero estas están buenísimas.
JILL: Your Spanish is improving.
IAN: ¿Es bueno o está bueno?
JILL: 😂 Just order the sardines, Ian.

YOUR 2-MINUTE MISSION

📸 Describe the world twice

Look around you and choose three people, places or objects.

For each one, make two sentences.

1️⃣ Tell me what it IS.
Use SER.

2️⃣ Tell me where/how it IS now.
Use ESTAR.

For example:

☕ El café es colombiano.
☕ El café está caliente.

👩 María es profesora.
👩 María está en casa.

Six sentences. Two lenses. One Spanish brain workout.

THE 10-SECOND MEMORY

🧠 What do you want to say?

🪪 SER Identity
Definition
Characteristics
Origin
Profession
Time & date
📍 ESTAR Location
State
Condition
How something is now
ESTAR + gerund
NEURO-SPANISH FOR YOU!

Don't translate “to be”.

Look at the situation. Decide what you want to communicate. Then choose the Spanish lens.

🪪 What is it? → SER
📍 Where/how is it? → ESTAR

And if you're still not sure... order another coffee, look around you and make another sentence.
