馃懆‍馃彨 Manuel's Spanish Tip

Quiero... or quisiera...?

Quiero una habitaci贸n is grammatically correct. It means I want a room.

But when speaking to hotel staff, Quisiera una habitaci贸n or Quisiera reservar una habitaci贸n sounds more polite and natural.

Think of quisiera as a useful Spanish politeness tool. You can reuse it in many situations:

  • Quisiera una mesa para dos. — I'd like a table for two.
  • Quisiera pedir cita. — I'd like to make an appointment.
  • Quisiera informaci贸n. — I'd like some information.
  • Quisiera pagar. — I'd like to pay.

One pattern, many real-life situations. That is much more useful than memorising dozens of isolated sentences.

馃С Hotel vocabulary you will actually use

la habitaci贸n the room
habitaci贸n doble double room
habitaci贸n individual single room
cama de matrimonio double bed
dos camas twin beds
el desayuno breakfast
el aparcamiento parking
la recepci贸n reception / front desk
la reserva reservation / booking
el hu茅sped / la hu茅sped guest

馃毃 Don't translate English word for word!

English speakers sometimes build Spanish sentences using English structure. You may be understood, but there is usually a simpler, more natural expression.

❌ Yo quiero hacer un booking.
✅ Quisiera hacer una reserva.

❌ ¿Tienes un room?
✅ ¿Tiene una habitaci贸n disponible?

❌ ¿El breakfast est谩 incluido?
✅ ¿Est谩 incluido el desayuno?

Don't worry about producing perfect Spanish. Your first objective is successful communication. Then we improve accuracy little by little.

馃嚜馃嚫 Spanish in the real world

In many hotels you will hear international words such as check-in and check-out, but knowing the Spanish alternatives makes you much more independent.

You may hear: entrada, salida, dejar la habitaci贸n, recepci贸n, reserva and alojamiento.

You don't need to understand every word the receptionist says. Listen for the important information: price + time + breakfast + room + parking.

馃 NeuroTip: learn chunks, not lonely words

Instead of memorising only habitaci贸n = room, learn a complete useful chunk:

Quisiera reservar una habitaci贸n.

Your brain can retrieve the complete expression when you need it. Repeat it three times now. Then return to it later today.

馃棧️ Your real-life mission

Imagine that tonight you arrive at a hotel in Spain. Say these four sentences aloud without reading the English:

  1. Quisiera reservar una habitaci贸n.
  2. ¿Cu谩nto cuesta por noche?
  3. ¿Est谩 incluido el desayuno?
  4. ¿Hay aparcamiento?

If you can say those four sentences, you already know enough Spanish to start a real conversation at reception.
